What Is Evangelism and Why Does It Matter Today?
You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. -Matthew 5:14 (NIV)
Evangelism is a word many people hear in church, but not everyone fully understands what it means. Evangelism is simply telling others about Jesus Christ and the good news of what He has done for us. It means sharing the message that Jesus came to save us, loves us, and wants a relationship with us.
Evangelism is necessary for Christians because Jesus told us to do it. In Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus said, “Go and make disciples of all nations… teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” This is called “The Great Commission.” It means that all Christians are called to spread the gospel, not just pastors or church leaders. If we have received the love and truth of Jesus, we should want others to experience it too.
So, why does evangelism matter today?
The world is filled with challenges like sadness, pain, fear, and confusion. Many people feel lost or lonely. Some are searching for peace and happiness in the wrong places. But the truth is only Jesus can provide peace and joy. That’s why evangelism is still so important. People need to hear that God loves them and that there is hope in Christ.
Romans 10:14 says, “How can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?” This reminds us that if we don’t tell others about Jesus, they may never know Him. Evangelism is how people find out about God’s love and the gift of salvation. It's like having good news that can save someone’s life—you wouldn’t want to keep that to yourself.
These days, there are many ways to evangelize. It’s not just about preaching to a crowd or going from door to door. You can evangelize through:
-One-on-One Conversations
Sometimes, the most impactful way to share Jesus is through a simple, honest conversation. You don’t need to preach—you just need to talk. You can tell a friend about what God has done in your life or offer to pray for someone going through a tough time. These small moments can open the door to much larger discussions about faith.
-Social Media
Especially nowadays, social media has become a great place to share the gospel. You can post Bible verses, Christian quotes, short videos, testimonies, or even songs that point people to Jesus. You never know who might see your post and feel encouraged, comforted, or curious to learn more about God.
-Inviting Others to Church or Christian Events
You don’t always have to do the talking yourself. Sometimes, evangelism is as simple as inviting a friend to church, a youth meeting, or a gospel concert. They will hear a message there that touches their heart in a way they weren’t expecting.
Ultimately, every Christian can discover a technique that suits their character and lifestyle among the various means of sharing the good news of Jesus. Whether you speak, write, sing, post, or simply live out your faith, you are planting seeds.
If this spoke to you, don't keep it to yourself. Share this message with someone who might need this today. Join our WhatsApp Community for daily encouragement and inspiration from the Word of God.
