Beauty in the Lord’s Language: Seeing Beauty God's Way

"Thank you for making me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is marvelous—how well I know it." -Psalm 139:14 (NLT).

Beauty is a relative appeal, subject to the fleeting existence of human paradigms and trends. When spending time in God’s word, I can’t help but stand still, not still as in a state of static motion, but still, in the sense that I begin to ponder on the question what is beauty or what is beautiful? and what has helped me come to the understanding of that definition. According to Oxford Languages, “beauty is a combination of qualities, such as shape, color, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.”

In this definition, words that strike me include qualities, pleases, aesthetic senses, and sight.

  • What are “qualities,” and how do we deem them worthy of admiration?

When we often think of qualities, our minds quickly go to superficial things; things we find observable, things we can feel and touch, act upon, even. But is that all there is to qualities? They make us unique, whether in personality, aesthetic sense, or talents. However, qualities are rooted in governing principles. As individuals, you have personal standards that shape your reach, scope, and understanding of humanity. Yet, as Children of God, once you receive the Holy Spirit, your standards, goals, desires, and passions must be transformed.

In Galatians 5:24-25, it says, " [24] Those who belong to Christ Jesus have nailed the passions and desires of their sinful nature to his cross and crucified them there. [25] Since we are living by the Spirit, let us follow the Spirit’s leading in every part of our lives."

This isn’t to say your personal qualities don’t matter or that you do not have existing qualities; the catch is that when walking in the consciousness of the Lord’s presence in our lives and being sensitive to the leading and guidance of the Holy Spirit, we begin to realize that qualities are God’s reflection of himself in us and everything we do. The realization of this is a journey, especially in the world we live in, but hey! You're a part of the culture shift now, and there's no going back—Gaise Baba and Pastor Lawrence had it first.

  • Who are you trying to please and why?

You’re scrolling through Instagram or talking with a friend. It gets to a point where you realize that everyone seems sure of themselves, opinions flying everywhere. And suddenly, you pause. A quiet thought creeps in: Am I living for me, or just trying to keep up?

We don’t always say it out loud, but many of us feel pressured to look a certain way, achieve certain things, or meet silent expectations. Even when we claim independence, we often shape our choices around what others might think. Maybe it’s striving for a comeback, not just for growth, but so people will finally change their minds about us. Maybe it’s hoping success will finally catch the attention of that one friend.

These quiet pressures shape how we see ourselves and even how we define beauty. But in God’s eyes, beauty isn’t about performance, perception, or applause. It’s about a life that reflects Him.

True beauty, in the Lord’s language, is found in surrender. In choosing to live for the One who created you. It’s not driven by the need to prove anything but by a desire to please the Lord.

“Carefully determine what pleases the Lord.”Ephesians 5:10 (NLT)
“Trying to learn by experience what is pleasing to the Lord, and letting your lifestyle be an example of what is most acceptable to Him.”Ephesians 5:10 (AMP)

That is what beauty looks like in His eyes. Not filtered. Not pressured. Just real, quiet obedience flowing from a heart submitted to Him.

Before chasing any version of beauty sold to you by the world, ask instead: What does God call beautiful?

  • Where is your Gaze?
“My son, give me your heart, and let your eyes delight in my ways.” -Proverbs 23:26 (AMP).

Our eyes are windows. Our hearts are homes. Together, they shape how we perceive, process, and live. But take a moment to ask yourself: What do your windows and home really look like? To see beauty the way the Lord sees it, we must turn our gaze toward Him. That happens in the secret place—through prayer, fasting, time in His Word, and by guarding what we allow into our hearts. Gossip, slander, and spiritual distractions don’t just pass unnoticed. They clutter the soul. And like a messy house, a cluttered heart becomes harder to navigate.

Still, don’t be discouraged. The Lord invites us in whatever state we are. He doesn’t demand perfection, just surrender. He takes our chaos, confusion, and emptiness and patiently begins a work of transformation. He is the master of beautiful unravelling.

True beauty, in the Lord’s language, is found in intentionally inviting Him into our lives.

Genesis 1:27 (NLT)

“So God created human beings in His own image. In the image of God, He created them; male and female He created them.”

While you walk this journey, give thanks. When your confidence is low, when you feel unseen, unworthy, or unsure, praise Him. God reveals His glory in our gratitude.

Hebrews 13:15 (NLT)

“Therefore, let us offer through Jesus a continual sacrifice of praise to God, proclaiming our allegiance to His name.”

Beauty, in God’s language, begins with reverence, clarity of gaze, and a heart fully His. That is where true transformation begins.

  • Confidence in His Image

God doesn’t overlook your physical form—He designed it. Every strand of hair, every feature, every curve, every detail was shaped by His hand. But in a world obsessed with surface, He invites you to go deeper. Not to abandon beauty, but to understand it through His eyes.

You are not the sum of your reflection. You are the breath of God, wrapped in dignity, covered in grace, and formed in the beauty of His image. Confidence begins there, not in how others see you, but in how He sees you. Be confident in the way you dress, the conversations you have, and how you carry yourself. Beauty is much more than pretty, acne-free faces or tall and muscular builds. If appearance alone sustained love, more marriages would endure.

When you stand in that truth, you walk differently. Not in arrogance, but in quiet strength. Not needing to prove anything, but knowing you are already known and loved.

“Those who look to Him are radiant; their faces are never covered with shame.”
Psalm 34:5 (NIV)

So, fix your eyes on Him. Let His gaze shape yours. In His light, you’ll see beauty clearly—especially your own.
