A City Set on a Hill (Spoken Word)
I heard a small but powerfully persuasive whisper:
“Your light is gone.”
“You are no different from everyone in the room.”
“Just an ordinary girl, nothing more.”
The voice spoke in a melodious, mocking tone. I went silent, defeated and pained, with just a splash of anger, always amusingly directed at myself. Then I heard a chuckle of victory. He knew he had won this battle at least for now.
Who could this be, whispering these heartbreaking lies?
Could it be true? I wondered. And there it was again—that same voice. But this time, I had a response. I had a weapon. More profoundly, I had an identity. I began declaring it quietly in my heart, but ended it out loud with an assertiveness:
“CAN NEVER BE HIDDEN.”
Matthew 5:14 – You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
This is just one shade of the prickling, piercing, burrowing nature of insecurity. Sometimes it's not about our bodies or faces, but about the uncertainty of our worth, doubts about the value of our destinies. Insecurities that don’t show up in the mirror, but whisper silently when we sit alone, reflecting on the big things' others are doing—or the big things we once did.
So, let’s look into the real mirror: the blueprint of our creation. The truth of our identity. The original you.
Galatians 5:25–26 MSG – Since this is the kind of life we have chosen, the life of the Spirit, let us make sure that we do not just hold it as an idea in our heads or a sentiment in our hearts, but work out its implications in every detail of our lives. That means we will not compare ourselves with each other as if one of us were better and another worse. We have far more interesting things to do with our lives. Each of us is an original.
Each of us is an original.
You. Me. The person beside you. Each one of us is a unique, handcrafted creation of God. No fakes, no dupes, no sub-standards in this brand of royal priesthood. Each person is the first and last of their kind.
As a Nigerian or American, your citizenship is a part of your identity, with a physical passport to prove it. Likewise, as a child of God, we are chosen and set apart, with the Bible as our spiritual passport. No one can walk up to you and say you’re not Nigerian—you'd likely reply, “You may not know where I’m from, but I do. I AM NIGERIAN.” That same boldness should come when lies question your spiritual identity.
1 Peter 2:9 – But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
Words like chosen, royal, holy, light, and special aren’t just titles—they're unshakable identities. We who have been called out of darkness into His marvelous light cannot have our light stolen or dimmed. We are God’s light in the world, and God’s light cannot be overcome.
John 1:5 – The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
These truths are our affirmations—not whispered timidly, but declared boldly, with a voice strong enough to drown out lies. When truth shows up, deceit disappears.
We are set apart to be pruned so we can bear even more fruit. We are trimmed, reshaped, and refined from season to season. But even in that process, we are still conquerors—more than conquerors.
Romans 8:37 – Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
With the knowledge of who God is in your right hand, and the knowledge of who you are in your left, let fear, uncertainty, and worry melt away. Intimidate those voices every day with declarations of your true identity.
Isaiah 54:17 (MSG) – I’ll see to it that everything works out for the best. God’s Decree.
Not everything works out okay, or good, or better. But everything works out for the best. You are no average person.
So, from today, wear your crown with pride. Walk, talk, eat, and speak like who you truly are—carrying the confidence of your royal identity in Christ.
Oh, what a confidence booster! 👑✨
